Beaches in L'Escala (Catalonia) Spain - advise, map and photos

L'Escala seaside resort is situated in Catalonia on the Costa Brava next to the French border and to the beaches of Empuriabrava in the gulf of Roses.

Old fishing village, l'Escala has opened torwards seaside tourism like lots of Costa Brava cities. Its seafront is mainly composed of buildings from the 60’s with shops only opened during summer. The neighborhood around Sardana square is pleasant with several restaurants on the seafront and a pleasant urban beach. The neighborhood of Montgo (south of Escala) is more residential (mostly houses and small residences). North, we find the ruins of Empuries (Greek and Ancient Rome archeological site, excavations are still in progress, can be visited) and the very well restored little village of Sant Marti of Empuries.

We find several beaches in l'Escala with various environments. That of Riells is the most urban and family one. South, that in Cala Montgo offers a more pleasant and original environment, while maintaining the spanish party spirit with lots of near seaside establishments.

From Escala harbor, lots of excursions are organized to discover Cape Creus, Medes islands (at only one kilometer off Estartit harbor – they are 7 protected islands with beautiful seabeds).

Next to Escala, we appreciate the beaches of Palafrugell and of Begur that are the most beautiful of the Costa Brava. They are situated in old little fishermen’s ports whose authenticity has been preserved. North, Roses beaches are very appreciated by French and the village of Cadaques is unmissable.
