Most important tourist pole of the south of Lanzarote (Canary Islands), Playa-Blanca has known an exponential urbanization in the last decade.
Its seaside is very pleasant with buildings of reasonable size, many restaurants and a very nice pedestrian promenade. Unfortunately, the outskirts of the city are less welcoming with many buildings and small abandoned houses … probably the consequence of the last Spanish real estate crisis … really bad because it distorts the south of Lanzarote.
On the beaches side of Playa Blanca the choice is vast and it is here that we find the most beautiful beaches of Lanzarote. Unlike the rest of the island, the beaches are made of fine sand (no lava flow here). The most beautiful beaches are at the East point, at the level of Punta Papagayo. They are accessible by a dirt track (with a toll – 3€ per vehicle) and offers a sumptuous setting with cliffs, dunes and in the background the volcanos of Lanzarote. On a clear day, we even have a view on the north coast of Fuerteventura with the dunes of Corralejo.
In our opinion, Playa Blanca is a little too far south to perfectly discover Lanzarote (many points of interest in the center and in the north). However, its proximity with Fuerteventura is an advantage (35 minutes by boat). Those who prefer the animated resorts will rather go to Puerto del Carmen (very frequented by the British).
